Santrauka [EN]

The aim of the study was to investigate information’s presented in the media influence on citizens’ confidence in the courts.

Three Kaunas universities 1 – 4 courses’ students participated in the study, total 128. Influence of media coverage was found by experiment, in which author of the work created stimulative material was given to participants of the study. Stimulative material was created in accordance with the analysis of scientific literature and articles about the justice presented in media. Participants were divided into four experimental groups by stimulative material, in each group after 32 participants. Fairness and confidence in the courts have been assessed by A. Laurinavičius (2005) developed five scales that were adapted to this study and measure: fairness of outcome, the neutrality of the court, judge’s efforts, the judge’s respect and confidence in the courts. The results of the study showed that media coverage affects citizens' trust in the courts. Negative information about court’s decision presented in the media has a negative impact on both evaluation of fairness and confidence in the courts. The result also showed that given information about corruption of judges people negative evaluate some criterion of fairness: judge’s efforts and the judge’s respect. But this information doesn’t affect confidence in the courts. It was also established that highlighting information about fairness of outcome doesn’t affect evaluation of fairness and confidence in the courts. This information doesn’t increase evaluations of fairness and confidence in the courts.
