Analysis of propolis extracts and evaluation of influence on stability of semi solid Eucerin o/w emulsion system.

The aim of this research is to study the total amount of polyphenol compounds and antioxidative activity of semi solid, liquid ethanol and oil propolis extracts and to estimate the technological aspects of the addition of these extracts to Eucerin o/w emulsion basis.

The total amount of polyphenol compounds in the extracts of propolis was determined using spectrophotometry. Pinocembrin and galangin, predominating propolis flavonoids, were chosen as a standard. Antioxidative activity was evaluated with the use of DPPH• stable free radical. The stability of propolis creams was investigated by centrifuging. Microstructure of propolis creams was studied using electronic microscope. pH value of propolis creams was determined with the help of pH-meter. The influence of liquid ethanol propolis extract addition to Eucerin o/w emulsion basis was estimated by monitoring the weight change of the creams.

The results of the study showed that semi solid extract of propolis is the richest in polyphenol compounds. The highest amount of polyphenols (6411,11 ± 421,67 mg/g) is extracted from this propolis extract using 96 per cent ethanol. The lowest amount of polyphenols (8,98 ± 0,47 mg/g) was derermined in oil extract of propolis using 70 per cent ethanol as an extrahent. All extracts of propolis showed high (72,90 to 84,76 per cent) antioxidant activity, evaluated using DPPH• stable free radical.

Stable emulsion systems are fitted by adding 0,5 – 3 per cent of liquid ethanol extract of propolis to Eucerin o/w emulsion basis without the use of emulsifier. The homogeneity and stability of Eucerin creams with liquid ethanol propolis extract meet the general control requirements for semi solid drug preparations. In addition to this, Eucerin creams with 0,5 – 3 per cent of liquid ethanol propolis extract show higher (from 34,55 to 70,21 per cent) antoxidative activity comparing to Eucerin o/w emulsion basis.

Liquid ethanol extract of propolis, added to Eucerin o/w emulsion basis, reduces Eucerin o/w emulsion system’s stability from 5 to 10 per cent depending on the concentration. However, it has no influence on the system’s pH value.

The study of propolis creams’ microstructure showed that the average droplet size of 0,5 per cent propolis cream is 34,2 ± 3,4 µm, the average droplet size of 3 per cent propolis cream is 39,76 ± 6,7 µm.
