Construction of the fear discourse in the reports on financial crisis in the ‘Business News’ section of Online News Portal Delfi.lt

The thesis dwells upon the construction of the fear discourse in the reports on the financial crisis in the business news section. It should be noted that the fear discourse is highly influential in the contemporary society, especially during the periods which are dramatically called as crisis. The media tends to overdo by providing the audience with threatening texts. Furthermore, it also ignores that the audience after each shocking message or report thrives for a release of a soothing item of the news. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that economic crisis is a perfect seedbed for the sprouts of fear. After the main stages of crisis as a social problem construction are completed the audience is highly sensitive to intimidating discourse. Thus it is important to attract attention how the media constructs the discourse of fear, what instruments journalists and editors employ to attract more attention from the frightened audience.

The aim of the research was by employing qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, to reveal how the media constructs fear discourse in headlines and illustrations. Even though in contemporary online media graphical elements are expected to function as abstract illustrations, but graphical elements and photographs are the ones which provide with stimulus for emotions as they often construct highly emotional visual discourse which affects just like a verbal discourse.

The thesis consists of two parts – the first dwells upon the theoretical questions about the construction of social problems, the mechanism and scheme of fear production, the peculiarities of the management of the online news portal and other related themes. This part of the thesis provides with the theoretical background for the succeeding chapter, which is dedicated to the presentation of the research results and discussion. The research revealed that the discourse of fear in the analyzed news items was emotional and intimidating, this effect has been reached by verbal and visual rhetoric, by using strong symbols of fear, picturing life during the crisis as a struggle of survival, etc.
