Training vocal skills of choristers by coordinating group and individual classes in Lithuanian music (art) schools
Santrauka [EN]

Singing is a significant form of musical training and consolidation of music cultural traditions. One of the most accessible and prevailing type of singing is choral singing. Therefore it is important to ensure high quality choral training. However each choir consists of separate singers having their own individual singing problems. Sometimes it is difficult or even impossible to solve such problems during group classes. To ensure optimal choristers’ vocal skills training it is necessary to work with them both in group classes where harmonious sound is being sought and in individual classes where individual singing is being improved.

When analysing vocal skills training of choristers from the Lithuanian music (art) schools, we tried to find out how group and individual classes are being coordinated in training vocal skills of choristers in the Lithuanian music (art) schools. To achieve this objective, the scientific, methodical and educational sources of literature were analysed, the ways of group and individual training of singing skills of choristers in the Lithuanian music (art) schools were determined, the demand of choristers from the Lithuanian music (art) schools for individual singing classes was examined as well as the particularities of mutual cooperation of choral (group) and solo (individual) singing teachers in regard to training choristers’ singing skills were analysed.

All Lithuanian music (art) schools, the activities of which involve choral singing, were invited to participate in the research. During the research, a telephone survey of 97 schools was carried out, a questionnaire survey involving 1200 choristers and all choral and solo singing teachers was performed as well as 28 interviews with choirmasters and solo singing teachers were conducted. The results of the research showed that only few choristers were taught solo singing, while teachers believe that almost all choristers should be taught individually. Furthermore, individual classes are mostly attended by best singers as opposed to choristers who need help most of all. The research also revealed that cooperation between choral and solo singing teachers is insufficient in many schools.
