The present work is devoted to the merging of video games and educational contents, considering the possibilities of programming software to create video games and e. courses with gaming elements. The main aim of the thesis was to promote multimedia tools and video games to education.

Freely accessible learning games and e. courses with gaming elements in Lithuania were reviewed in the work. Special attention was paid to the tools created for the secondary school students. The comparative analysis of free or cheap software for creation of video games or e. courses with gaming elements was carried out to show its functionality, accessibility and easy use. Game’s development process, its principles, main steps and implementation were described. Possibilities of the five different software for creation games or e. courses with gaming elements were investigated and described. The learning material for participants of the international project “Learning game” about the software use has been created and used at the seminars of the project.

The author has created the pilot course with gaming elements “The School of Athens”, and it was used as a result of Vilnius Pedagogical University researchers’ group – the participant of the project. The pilot course and its development is properly described in the thesis.
