Phenomenological analysis of subordinate conflict with manager experience

Objectives: qualitative assessment of subordinate conflict with manager experience.

Participants: 16 employees, 24-55 years old. 8 of them were business enterprise workers, 8 – public officers.

Methods: to explore conflict experience, standardized interviews were conducted. These were evaluated using the qualitative content analysis according to Eckartsberg (1998) existential-phenomenological research method.

Results: conflict with manager is perceived as crisis when anxiety, fault, despair, loneliness, sorrow, and a flush of emotions are experienced. Employees feel irritated, diminished, scrubbed, self-unconfident. Somatic reactions as sweat-breaking, cheeks-blushing, and voice-rising are observed. Discrepancy between the expectations and the reality is conceived. Also employees analyse their behaviour and emotions while managing the conflict. The results indicate that conflict with manager is experienced as stressful situation, so it’s necessary to reduce the number of organizational conflicts.
