Low choice of antifungal preparations, toxicity, and limited spectrum of action as well as risk of resistant strains prove the need of new effective medicines for systemic fungal diseases. Recently, there has been growing concern of rapidly increasing bacteria resistance to the antibacterial preparations in the markets, more effective and safe preparations are still missing.

4-Thiazolidinone derivatives prepared at Kaunas University of Medicine by incorporating three pharmacophores in one molecule possessed high biological activity. Previous successful works of scientists in this field encouraged us to develop new 4-thiazolidinone derivatives.

The Aim of the Research
|
To synthesize potential antifungal and antibacterial 4-thiazolidinone derivatives with substituents in 2nd and 5th positions as well as to evaluate the effect of their structure upon the activity.

The Objectives of the Research:
|
1. To synthesize 5-substituted 2-(methylthio)thiazol-4(5H)-ones using aldol condensation reaction;
|
2. To synthesize 2,5-substituted thiazolidinone derivatives by amination of 5-substituted 2-(methylthio)thiazol-4(5H)-ones;
|
3. To evaluate antifungal and antibacterial activity of 2- and 5 substituted 4-thiazolidinone derivatives:
|
• using the PASS program,
|
• using a serial broth dilution technique in vitro;
|
4. To establish the main principles of the antifungal and antibacterial activity and chemical structure of the synthesized 4-thiazolidinone derivatives on the basis of the gained experimental data.
